What is Basketball?

Basketball basics and how to play

Basketball is a sport in which players compete with the goal of shooting a basketball through the defenders hoop while preventing the opponent from successfully shooting through their own hoop. Players advance the ball through the act of dribbling (bouncing the ball while walking or running) or passing to a teammate. On offense players may use use a variety of techniques to score such as the lay-up, jump shot or dunk. Defensive players may stop the opponent by stealing the ball, intercepting passes, or blocking shots.

While rules vary, traditionally basketball consists of two teams competing against one another to score the most points. In most formats, a field goal is worth two points, while a successful shot from behind the three-point arch results in three points. If fouled, a player may take shots from the free-throw line which is worth one point per attempt made.
